Making Photos

Cellphone, ...pix camera

Don't do it. The results are just disappointing. Clubs and concert halls are far too dark and you'd annoy other visitors and the musicians, because nothing works without a flash. If you still can't let it, here are some tips:
  • Read the manual and adjust the brightness of the built-in flash as far as possible down. The automatic exposure ensures the correct exposure.
  • Adjust the sensitivity of the sensor as high as possible, usually 400 ISO. The image noise will become amplified. Check at home, whether you can live with the noise.
  • Attach a color conversion filter to the flash. This is a real insider tip! The flash is blue compared to the neutral stage spots. Lee filter foil No. 204 converts the flash light to stage lighting with 3200K color temperature! You will find the film in well-stocked photo specialty stores or on the Internet transit.
  • Adjust the white balance of the camera to artificial light (bulbs symbol).

Fathers analog SLR camera

The problem in clubs and even concert halls in some cases is the light, respectively the darkness. In the 80 years, with almost any camera body came a really high-quality optical lens included. These 50mm fixed focal lenses had largest apertures of 1.8 to 1.4, so they are very good for shooting concerts. The only problem is, not all of these 50mm lenses were shipped with lens hoods. You need one. The complicated handling is currently somewhat problematic, however, justify the much-improved results some effort!
  • In most cases the security won't let you in with a SLR. Exceptions are bands defining themselves as closed to their fans. Usually, you can easily photograph smaller club concerts when you ask for permission per mail.
  • Check whether the seals of the rear lid, and the mirror damping are still in order. These foam rubber seals can get decomposed by bacteria. Are the seals sticky?
  • Insert a cheap color slide film and try out whether the exposure times accurate 'tick'. The times are mechanically controlled in some cases.
  • For the concert use preferably a high-ISO BW film. For example Fuji Neopan 1600. No cheap material, but really good and it allows you to take pictures without flash.
  • Don't expect miracles. Everyone can do music without specific education and training, more or less well.
  • Shoot different, better! Have fun.
  • These few references are only meant to arouse your interest. Maybe you will discover that you really love music photography. Then you'll read all the books you can find and use the Internet as a virtually inexhaustible source of knowledge.
